An initiative from the Kern Family Living Center (KFLC), California donated trainers and
sweatshirts to local teens, it has emerged.
The scheme, backed by the West Side Christian Ministers Association and the local business community, provided sportswear to 100 young people in the Taft area, reports the Midway Driller.
As part of an outreach programme to support at-risk teens in the area, the
sweatshirt giveaway was intended to draw support for the KFLC's drug prevention work.
"The idea started with the West Side Christian Minister's Association who wanted to do something about the drug problem in the community," Scott Pearson, minister at the First Baptist Church, told the newspaper.
"They got together with the [KFLC], which does drug prevention and abuse for counsellors and was looking for an opportunity to bring their services [to] Taft."
Some $5,000 (£2,543) was raised by local businesses, individuals and community groups, helping the organisations to buy trainers and
sweatshirts for the scheme.
"People were very generous with their donations," Mr Pearson added.
Meanwhile, US-based company Roofer's Supply is launching a
sweatshirt giveaway to encourage people to donate food to charity, Desert News claims.
The firm will give
sweatshirts to any customers donating 20 lbs of food or more to the Utah Food Bank.
