T-shirt 'can hug via SMS'
Tuesday 12th of December 2006 11:45:00 AM

Scientists have developed a new
t-shirt that allows the wearer to receive virtual hugs which simulate the experience of being embraced by a loved one.
The technology uses Bluetooth to allow people to hug each other remotely and is activated when a friend or family member sends a virtual hug by short message service (SMS).
Wearers of the
tee will receive a cuddle - which matches the pressure points and warmth the sender would use - as Bluetooth technology allows the receiver's mobile phone to wirelessly notify the
t-shirt.
Time magazine has nominated the Hug Shirt as one of the best inventions of this year.
According to the publication, the
tee-shirt works by using smart technology pads, while sensors and actuators record a person's skin temperate, hugging time, hug pressure and heartbeat.
No details have yet been given about the cost of the
t-shirt, which is fully washable.
Meanwhile, Australian scientists have developed a
tee that allows wearers to recreate the music made by strumming to an air guitar.
Motion sensors in the
t-shirt relay movements in the elbows to a computer that then produces sound.
