Woburn Memorial High School has been faced with a bill for thousands of dollars for its band uniform, according to the local media.
In order to provide the 65-strong school band with a new uniform, which according to school committee member Michael Mulrenan cost $300 apiece, the Massachusetts school would need to pay around £20,000 (£10,224), the Daily Times Chronicle reports.
"We don't have that kind of money," Mr Mulrenan told the newspaper. "It's not that the school committee doesn't want to supply these types of needs."
Educational board member Dr John Wells claims the school should consider alternative uniforms and suggested the use of
cheap sweatshirts.
Meanwhile, a US-based charity is providing free school uniforms, including shirts and
sweatshirts to children, the St Louis Post Dispatch claims.
A St Louis project, Operation School Bell has been working with kids in the area for 17 years, fitting them for school uniforms.
