T-shirts manufacturer may acquire first Asian site

Wednesday 01st of November 2006 11:45:00 AM

T-shirts manufacturer may acquire first Asian siteHanesbrands, US-based t-shirts manufacturer, has announced plans to acquire a sewing plant in Thailand.

The site, in Chonburi, which is currently part of Goldindo International (Thailand) and makes bras for Hanesbrands, would be the group's first Asia-based sewing facility.

Located 50 miles south-east of Bangkok, the 93,000 sq ft factory employs around 1,600 people and if acquired by Hanesbrands, will manufacture underwear under the firm's various brands, including Hanes, Playtex and Bali.

The consideration was not disclosed, although the t-shirts manufacturer said the acquisition is expected to be complete by the end of this month.

Hanesbrands chief executive Richard Noll said: "Adding company-owned sewing capability in Asia is a key component of our ongoing efforts to create a low-cost global supply chain.

"We […] are moving quickly to develop a greater presence for our supply chain in Asia."

Hanesbrands, which manufactures t-shirts under its brand Hanes, uses Hong Kong-based operations to source raw materials and finished products in the Asian market.

It also has offices in China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and Turkey and markets products in Japan, Korea and the Philippines.

Given this global presence, Mr Noll commented that the Chonburi acquisition "is an important building block" for the group's distribution process in Asia.

Gerald Evans, Hanesbrands executive vice president, said the established work force at the Thailand site will help the t-shirts manufacturer accelerate its distribution strategy.

Last month, Hanesbrands launched in an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange following a spin off from Sara Lee.
