Sweatshirts 'used to support troops'

A US rally to support the armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan saw troops' family members decked out in sweatshirts bearing pictures of their loved ones.

A four-hour event at Taunton Green yesterday, the rally was attended by almost 20 veterans' groups, reports the Taunton Gazette.

Meanwhile, Diane Bell and her family gave their support in the form of white sweatshirts emblazoned with a picture a picture of Ms Bell's son Ryan - a private with the US Army.

Dennis Proulx, a veteran of the Vietnam War, addressed the 100-strong crowd saying: "I know what it's like to be treated [badly], being in an unpopular war - but we won't let [today's soldiers] go through what we did," the newspaper reports.

Rally members brought care packages, including canned goods, stuffed animals and items of clothing to be sent to the armed forces.

Recently, a charity ball from t-shirt manufacturer Russell Athletic used sweatshirts to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
