New European Union (EU) funding has been granted for a digital finishing project which could see t-shirts, sweatshirts and polo shirts finished using nanoscale processes.
Dutch textiles business TenCate is to coordinate the Digitex project, which will see the development of technologies for digital textile finishing.
Digitex is to be a four-year programme, with a total budget of €12.7 million (£8.6 million) - €6.8 million of which has been secured as a grant subsidy.
The project will encompass the work of 26 partners, comprising ten universities and 16 businesses.
Focusing on the development of hardware and software, Digitex aims to enable the surface treatment of textiles in finishing processes on a nanoscale.
TenCate claims the new technology will increase the competitiveness of the European textile industry by developing new applications for materials.
"A significant additional advantage is the reduction that can be achieved in the area of environmental impact and energy costs", the firm added.
