Experts 'meet to discuss organic cotton for t-shirts'

Tuesday 03rd of October 2006 12:00:00 PM

Experts 'meet to discuss organic cotton for t-shirts'Experts will meet in India next month to discuss the implications of the growth in organic cotton production, which affects the t-shirt and sweatshirt manufacturing industries.

Taking place between November 6th and 9th, the 2006 India Regional Supply Chain Meeting and Regional Farm Development Meeting in Bangalore is a chance for organisations to meet with firms from all parts of the supply chain.

Organic farmers from India and around the globe, along with environmental and social non-profit organisations, will also be present, according to fibre2fashion.

India is the world's second producer of organic cotton, the publication claims, supplying key manufacturers from around the world including Nike and H&M.

Over the four years 2001 to 2005, the growth in global sales of organic cotton was recorded at 35 per cent year-on-year, while revenues are expected to reach $2.6 billion (£1.4 billion) by 2008.

Recently, at an Organic Exchange meeting in Holland, industry experts outlined the key challenges facing organic cotton growers – one of which was said to be meeting growing demand.

Rebecca Calahan Klein, Organic Exchange's president, told Inteletex: "We have indications that conventional cotton farmers are likely to convert to organic, with brands now actively looking at supporting new yarn development."
