Plans to take over a factory formerly used by t-shirt manufacturer Fruit of the Loom have been rejected, according to a news provider.
Initial plans, lodged with Buncrana Town Council by Jansu Developments, are to construct a new complex on the Fruit of the Loom factory site at Ballymacarry in Buncrana on Ireland's east-coast.
The scheme would create a mixed commercial and residential area at the 5.89 acre site by demolishing the Fruit of the Loom buildings.
However, reports from the Highland Radio yesterday indicate that the town's council have rejected the proposals by one vote.
The local shorefront residents group had been opposed to the redevelopment, although according to spokesperson Marian McIlleny, members are prepared to enter further discussions with the construction firm.
In related news, t-shirt and polo-shirt manufacturer Gilan has announced plans for a restructuring, which it says will help reduce costs.
The manufacturer hopes to make gains over competitors, such as Fruit of the Loom, by moving capacity to lower cost plants.
