The European Union's High Level Group on Textiles and Clothing has detailed a plan for t-shirt and clothing manufacturers to increase competitiveness.
In a report, the group calls for the textile and clothing manufacturing industry "to become leaner and more cooperative with higher productivity".
In addition, the report recommends a greater proportion of manufacturers' turnover be set aside for exports, along with an increased support for research and innovation, which was deemed crucial.
European Commission vice president Gunter Verheugen said the textile and manufacturing industry "is well advanced in making the structural changes and innovations required to adapt to the new dynamics brought by globalisation".
In the innovation context, the group advocated a distribution of research objectives, indicating that stakeholders should identify potential flagship projects for the industry as a whole.
The high level group was established in 2004 to help the European apparel manufacturing industry meet the demands of operating in a quota free environment.
