Polo shirts are so practical that more and more schools in the United States are making polo shirts the required dress code. The most recent additions were in the Hickory, North Carolina public school system. Until the recent school board meeting, polo shirts were only required to be worn at the high schools, but now the dress code has been extended to the middle school also and even to some elementary schools.School teachers like the dress code for several reasons. Some say it has cut down on the bullying because students are dressed so similarly. The polo shirts and cargo pants also make good uniforms for school because they fully cover the body. A third reason is that students don’t get in a fashion competition trying to outdo each other with their clothing.
Of course, kids will be kids. Some students try to test their teachers by wearing colours that are not approved. The school is considering narrowing the choice of colours allowed because the students were going showing their independence by wearing a rainbow of colours and then arguing that the colours met the school code. The only acceptable colours allowed right now are light grey, light pink (no hot pink allowed), gold, burgundy and white. There is discussion about limiting the colors to just one for the top and one for the pants.
The school also allows students to wear sweatshirts but only one style approved by the school. Students who violate the dress code first get a warning. The second violation earns the student a school detention. Students are informed of the dress code when they begin school and teachers see no reason for the code to be violated.
Parents and teachers like the school dress code because less money must be spent on school clothes and kids can spend time on school work rather than worrying about the latest fashion trends.
