On 7-June at Earls Court II, you will find a fashion show with the latest designs but you won’t find the big fashion names. This is the Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) show and only the up and coming young designers will be present. This show is designed to help these young people kick off their fashion careers by giving them a forum to showcase their creations. If you think this is all about jeans and t-shirts though, then think again. These young adults are going to be the next generation of British fashion designers, and they are interested in designing everything from t-shirts to dresses.
What makes this show so fascinating is that new talent always comes up with unusual new ideas. The fashion industry needs a jolt periodically too so that the same ideas aren’t recycled over and over again. The GFW has already launched several fashion designer careers including Karen Millen and Katie Eary, a High Street retailer. The GFW show will include fashion designs sponsored by De Montfort University (DMU) and it is the designs of students studying in the school’s Fashion Design course that are eligible to participate. Only 18 outfits will be chosen to appear on the GFW catwalk from DMU.
Katie Eary graduated from DMU in 2006 and has already made a name for herself. Some of her architecturally inspired designs have appeared in fashion magazines and were featured at the MAN show during the autumn/winter 2009 Fashion Week. This only goes to prove the power of the GFW to give young designers a career boost.
This year is the 20th anniversary of GFW, and you can expect to find stunning new ideas. For example Harriet Blackwell from Southampton Solent University is offering a Japanese inspired graduate collection. The concepts for the designs are based on Wabi Sabi and Ma which look for beauty in imperfection and in negative space. This gives you just a brief glimpse into the exciting new fashions coming at GFW. So if you want tees check with your favourite online retailer. If you want to see what the next generation is bringing to fashion, then watch for Graduate Fashion Week.
