The growth in plus sized clothing, including everything from dresses to t-shirts, is not surprising given the frequent reports on the percent of the population that is overweight or obese. The Verdict numbers are supported by other research reports by WGSN and Mintel. Mintel reports that the plus size sales for womenswear will reach £4.42 billion by 2013.
With the increasing market for plus sized clothing, designers and retailers are adding new lines and forming new collaborations in order to meet demand. The larger women are demanding more stylish clothing instead of the traditional shifts and stretch pants that have been clothing line staples. Now you can find sexy lingerie, current style outfits, shape fitting pants and shirts and more.
Even the fashion language is changing. Where designers once talked only about size, they are now talking about shape. That’s because not all plus sized women are overweight! Women with large busts or hips often find they can’t comfortably wear clothing cut strictly according to standard sizes.
If you’re plus sized and shopping for your sweats, dresses, skirts, shirts or jeans, don’t be surprised by the great looking clothing that is now available in all sizes. Called “shapewear” the clothing is designed to be as comfortable and fashionable as clothing in the smallest sizes.
