Unlike those affordable enduring polo shirts in your closet, Primark sells fast fashion. Fast fashion refers to clothing that is worn no more than a few times and then tossed. It’s the type of clothing that usually sells best in good economic times because consumers must replace the clothes that get tossed so quickly.
One reason clothing like polo shirts and t-shirts is so popular is that you can get so many wearings out of it. Primark has relied on a young customer base and large sales volume for success. It’s current press release indicates that it faces a marked “slowing down” of consumer spending in the last few weeks. This means it expects sales to continue to decline.
Another issue that fashion industry members are dealing with is the rise in the price of cotton. Consumers can expect to see clothing prices rise by as much as 10 percent this year. Cotton prices are rising due to lower supplies after many natural disasters around the world coupled with increasing labour costs. Fortunately, you can go online and still find low prices for everything from shoes to sweatshirts. With so many people still unemployed and prices beginning to rise, consumers are facing a difficult 2011 on several fronts.
