Denim and T-Shirts are Small and Big Business in IndiaAround the globe, jeans and white t-shirts have become the iconic outfit for young and old alike. In India, denim means a lot more than. Gujarat is called the denim capital of India because it produces approximately 320 million meters of denim each year. Total denim production in India is expected to rise dramatically overall too. Currently 600 million meters per annum are produced, but by the end of 2011 that number is expected to increase to 800 million meters.

The first International Denim Conference will be held in Ahmedabad the end of this month. The conference is hosted by the Textile Association of India and the industry group Fibre2Fashion. The Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad is where you will find 350 delegates all talking denim. The goal is to promote the increased production and use of denim and share business ideas, information and strategies. India is an emerging economy and is expected to play a larger and larger role in the textile industry.

Did you know that in the US alone, according to India’s statistics, it is estimated that a man owns 8 pairs of jeans and a woman owns seven? Globally there are 5.5 billion meters of denim produced each year and India is expected to produce over a billion meters annually within the next 5 years. Currently India produces approximately 260 million jeans each year. Currently China is the largest producer of jeans at 2.0 billion meters annually, but if India has its way that will change in the next 5 to 10 years.

There’s no doubt about it – jeans and tees are here to stay. It has to be one of the most comfortable outfits ever made and that is reason enough to keep those 8 pairs of jeans and 20 t-shirts in your closet.
