Don’t put those t-shirts away as summer ends because the fashions aren’t changing. In fact, some people are saying that the 2010 fashion line up could just be called the 2011 fashion parade. The must-have clothing that women wore last fall are going to be seen yet again this fall. That’s perfectly fine too with those trying to balance their budgets. What’s in style this again? Stylish clothes include cargo pants that fit tightly and military jackets. It must be the ongoing wars that are leading to all this military style clothing, because the colours are even military browns and greens.
In cash strapped households, clothing budgets have taken a hit. But that doesn’t mean fashion is forgotten. In fact, it’s even more important to look nice when times are tough. The mental and emotional uplift you can get from wearing a fashionable outfit is important. What changes during economic downturns is that clothes shopping focuses on price more.
This year the back to basics are still in style. Stores have extremely large inventories of clothes on hand and one of the reasons fashions aren’t changing much is due to the inventory. Retailers are dragging back out the pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched to create similar but different styles. More traditional clothing rules right now like ladylike dresses and black slacks and shirts and camel colored winter coats. The somber colours reflect both fall colours and the emotional state of consumers.
So don’t put away the clothes you wore during 2010 expecting to find new styles in the stores. You can just pull out 2009 polo shirts, t-shirts, coats, dresses and other clothing and be right in style. Fashion it seems has taken a very practical turn. It is not about designers telling you what to wear but more about you deciding how to be fashionable within your budget. It seems the consumer still rules.
