If you’re tired of the heat then consider a visit to Northern California. The people there are enjoying an exceptionally cool summer. It’s so cool they are wearing sweaters and sweatshirts while much of the rest of the country, and the world for that matter, is trying to wear as little as possible. According to Alison Wilson talking to MercuryNews.com, "You'd never know it was August." At the time she made this statement, she was wearing a coat over a warm flannel shirt. You don’t think of summer as a time for sweatshirts, but most people in Northern California are glad to have them. According to the National Weather Service records, this area is having one of the coolest summers it has experienced in many years. Usually cities like San Jose will warm up into the 90s for a week but that has only happened 2 days this year. The consequences have been profound on some businesses like those selling air conditioners. Public and private pools are empty, fruit is ripening much slower and coastal beaches are only used by the hardy.
Children bundled up in sweatshirts can be seen playing outside, but they don’t always look happy. With school starting, it’s like they were cheated out of some of their summer days
What’s causing the cool weather? According to meteorologist Jan Null, "We've had this persistent trough, this cool air coming out of the Gulf of Alaska. That's why we've been cool since April.” Since April?? Yes, it has been cool all year and some residents of Northern California are ready for some warmer weather before fall weather sets in. There is one advantage to the cooler moister weather though. There have not been as many wildfires and that’s good news. Right now the prediction is for more cool weather so it looks like the sweatshirts and sweaters need to be kept handy. For those who don’t like hot weather that’s just fine as they watch the rest of the nation sweltering in the heat.
