The Full Figured Fashion Week is in progress in New York City and it’s turning heads. The reason the entrants are getting so much attention isn’t because of their full figures but it’s because the models are gorgeous and self-confident. Plus-size women have been relegated for years to the bottom of the fashion designers’ lists. But at this show the curvy woman taking center stage is wearing everything from high couture to trendy jeans and simple t-shirts. The addition of this full figured fashion event was prompted by women wearing plus-sizes going on a campaign to promote fashion for women who are not thin. The catwalk models are often skinny to the point of looking emaciated at times and the clothes they showcase are often not suitable for women wearing larger sizes. Tired of wearing unattractive loose clothing the plus sized women also have another message. They want the world to know that not everyone is interested in being thin. New York designer Monif Clarke was quoted as saying, “People think every plus-size woman is yearning to lose weight. We have body imperfections the same way other women do, but we feel great about ourselves.”
During the Full Figured Fashion Week dozens of women who wear larger sizes met to talk about their fashion needs. On the list is lingerie and more stylish club clothes. One of the problems designers have accommodating large sized women is that plus-size fashions cost more to produce. Large women carry weight in different ways and fashions must be designed to be more accommodating. This means they require more labor to create and produce. But one fact full figured women want to get across is that they are tired of looking at models with figures they will never achieve wearing clothes they will never fit.
