Eco-fashion has become an important trend in the fashion world as everyone tries to reduce their carbon footprint. For fashion designers this has meant turning away from products like fast fashion and using environmentally sound materials and processes. At first the eco-fashions left a lot to be desired in terms of styling, but that has changed. Some of the top fashion houses are producing lines of eco-fashion. In addition, style magazines like Vogue are promoting the environmentally sound clothing.Jenny Hwa is an eco-desinger and she has agreed to co-host a fashion show of eco-fashion with Wake Forest University in North Carolina.
Hwa owns the clothing company ‘loyale clothing’ and she said, “With every year that passes, it becomes easier to incorporate eco-friendly values into our shopping habits.” She also points out that shopping for eco-fashion does take some extra effort if you want to make sure you are buying truly eco-friendly fashion. That means understanding the types of eco-friendly fabrics used and buying clothes from lines that use natural dyes. The director of sustainability at Wake Forest University, Dedee DeLongpre Johnston makes a good point too. The price of clothing from developing countries is often cheaper because it is produced with less regulation. Eco fashion that is domestically produced may cost a bit more but that is because it meets regulations that insure environmentally sound practices are used in addition to paying Fair Trade wages to workers.
In other words, when shopping for your environmentally friendly tees it is not just price that should be taken into consideration. Johnston says, “To be conscious consumers we need to focus on things other than price as a value.”. Eco-friendly clothing is indistinguishable from traditional clothing in terms of styling and quality. That will be apparent at the show Hwa and Wake Forest are hosting which will also be attended by top designers.
