Men’s casual fashion has taken a turn towards a darker look this year. Some say it is due to the influence terrorism has had on the world which is also reflected in the detective television shows. For example, a show named “24” has a rogue cop who wears body armor and has a toughness that audiences find appealing. His bulletproof vests and sweaty plain t-shirts are now being adopted by youthful singers and hip-hop moguls and hipsters who want to look cool. So it’s not surprising that fashion designers decided to join the trend and are now incorporating the tough guy style into men’s fashions.

The protective gear style worn with plain white or black t-shirts creates a street tough style look that is macho. The style can be worn during the day or during an evening of night clubbing. Perhaps it is the versatility of the style that adds to its appeal. Some men are visiting military surplus stores to find their clothing. Clothing like barbed-wire printed t-shirts, hoodies, bulletproof vests and military jackets are selling. But many fashion designers are incorporating the counter-terrorism style in their lines of clothing and discovering men like this look which is so different from many of the runway male fashions that some consider “sissy”.

Companies like the London based specialty clothing BladeRunner are selling clothes like slash-proof t-shirts, tough looking gloves and protective sweatshirts are selling simply because they look “cool”. It has been noted that, at one time, this style of clothing would have caused concern because only thugs, terrorists and street criminals wore it. But now the close fitting t-shirts and bulletproof vests are considered novelties and add some macho to a man’s wardrobe.

Of course, women are not going to be left out of the fashion rage either. Fashion designer Alex Peake is selling women’s corsets that are multi-strapped and women’s bulletproof brassieres and vests. So next time you see someone wearing a Kevlar lined vest – don’t worry –it’s probably someone who just likes the high powered fashion look.
