Fashion Kids…Is It a Good Idea?

Tuesday 30th of August 2011 04:08:44 AM

Fashion Kids…Is It a Good Idea?Kids look great in cheap t-shirts. T-shirts are comfortable, wash and wear well, and are practical for just about every situation. But during fashion week, there were kids as young as 3-years old who paraded in tie-dye t-shirts, elegant dresses and trendy skirt and blouses. The question some asked was this: is it appropriate to have kids in fashion shows?

Everyone has an opinion about what is appropriate for children. But it was the young age that really caught people’s attention. At 3 years old, a child is still a baby and that is what concerns some people. The reason the kids were included in the fashion shows was to add a feeling of warmth and a bit of family love. Many of the children are the children of designers or designer family members. There were also children in the audience and there were often the children of sponsors or the press.

Stylish children look good and convey a sense of innocence to fashion that cannot be achieved with adult models. More children are being used in the fashion industry more frequently and not just as models. Some are bloggers expressing their fashion sense while others are guest correspondents giving a child’s view of fashion.

Not everyone is thrilled with this turn of events though. Some see it as manipulative behavior while others believe the family that brings children to fashion shows is being disrespectful to the designers. To many, fashion shows are inappropriate events for children and partly because they don’t know how to act. Anyone with children knows how messy they can be whether wearing tees or haute couture.

More importantly, some believe children will develop self-image problems as they grow up watching thin models with tiny waists strut down runways in expensive clothing. It’s easy to learn to believe you need to be excessively thin when you are young and consistently exposed to the “thin” culture.
