Used Tees and Other Clothing…Teaching Economics

There is more than one way to learn, and studying straight out of a book is not always the most effective. That is the theory behind the used clothing store being operated by students at Oshkosh West High School. The students are learning economics by selling used clothing in a store opened at the school in Wisconsin in the United States. The store is open to both students and the public looking for gently used clothing at affordable prices.

Students donate items ranging from prom dresses to blank t-shirts. It’s a great way for girls to find beautiful prom dresses at an affordable price with prom season starting soon. The store is named Vintage Vibes and is run by a marketing management class under the guidance of the class teacher, Nicole Peterson.

The recession has created a situation where many households are struggling to make ends meet. Money must first go to essentials like rent or mortgage payments and food, leaving very little for clothing. The community can find a variety of good quality clothing at Vintage Vibes and everything is under $10. The money earned through sales is then donated to various charities such as the Boys & Girls Club. When prom dress is sold, half of the money goes to a charity and half goes to the person donating the dress making it more like a consignment arrangement.

Vintage Vibes sells used sweatshirts, tees, sweaters, and pullovers among many other items. Students running the store learn about what it takes to operate a business and marketing promotions.
