Goth and Disney...Is it True?!

Did you know that Disney is going “Goth”? Do you even know what Goth is all about? Goth in the fashion world refers to a dark and somewhat morbid kind of clothing. Goth fashion includes plenty of black t-shirts and black pants or skirts worn with lots of heavy make-up. This doesn’t sound like something that would go with light-hearted Disney, but Disney is trying to reach a new market in the 18 to 34 year old age group.

What prompted this marketing twist was the release of the Tim Burton version of Alice In Wonderland. A children’s story originally, the movie has added a gothic flare and it’s proving to be very popular. Disney decided to capitalize on that popularity and now there are Disney Goth clothes for girls and women being sold,

To promote and sell the Goth products, Disney signed an agreement with the Goth retail store chain named Hot Topic, Inc. to offer the products in its 680 stores. Hot Topic, Inc sells lots of black clothing to females aged 12 to 22 years old. The Hot Topic company is going all out to promote the Alice in Wonder land clothes and jewelry. One store is being decorated as a miniature Wonderland. Other stores are using their window displays to attract shoppers.

In order to promote the sales of the clothes, Disney and Hot Topic hosted a big party at a Hollywood mall. The party included goth-pop bands and gave fans a chance to mingle with the stars of the movie. How long will this new fad last? Disney has no idea but hopes it will be for at least a couple of years. A lot depends on how well the public accepts the concept of a Goth Disney. But just to make sure the clothing lines appeal to all income groups and ages, Disney is also working with well-known designers to license high end products including designer tees to be sold in fashionable department stores.
