Classic white t-shirts are now considered to be almost sophisticated. They are certainly a staple of almost everyone’s wardrobe. These shirts can be paired with jeans or tuxedo pants for eclectic looks that scream “fashionable”.Now the plain white t-shirt is being taken to new fashion heights thanks to Ritchie Chan of Triple Major. His creative studio and agency has asked global designers to submit experimental designs using only a white t-shirt. The call for creativity has gone out to 31 designers around the world. The idea is to submit an unusual or innovative t-shirt design to reinvent this particular clothing. The designs that have been submitted make a fascinating collection of shirts that are more like artwork than clothing.
The purpose of the collection is to raise money for the charity Designers Against Aids. The shirts were first displayed online in an internet exhibition. Then the collection, called Project White T-Shirt, was moved to an L.A. boutique first and will be displayed at a variety of events through February 2010. Once the viewing exhibitions are done, the shirts will be auctioned with all proceeds going to the charity.
Designers Against Aids presents a number of fund raising events each year. The events are listed on their website. The plain t-shirts for the current exhibition are extremely varied. There are shirts that are virtually strips of material to t-shirts that are full and long. It’s an exciting new look at the classic tee worn everyday by people. Ritchie Chan has taken a very personal interest in this project and has documented each designer’s creative process from beginning to end for each shirt in the exhibit.
