UK National Academy for Fashion and Textile Fails to Materialize

Friday 04th of December 2009 02:08:06 AM

UK National Academy for Fashion and Textile Fails to MaterializeIt had been reported that the UK government was working on developing a new National Academy For Fashion and Textile skills training. The textile industry has been pushing for the new academy because it is generally believed among mill operators that there will not be a good supply of trained skilled workers without such an academy. In addition, industry representatives have publicly criticized existing programs as being inadequate in the training that is currently offered.

In the UK there is an Innovation and Skills Minister. The position is currently held by Kevin Brennan. He has indicated that the academy plans had proven to be insufficient and the project could not move ahead. He directed the textile mills to use the Train to Gain program to locate skilled workers. In addition, the textile mills and fashion design firms can develop in-house apprenticeship programs through existing educational programs.

The fashion and textile industry produces everything from polo shirts to upholstery. Mr. Malcolm Campbell of the Joseph H. Clissold cloth firm has told Prime Minister Gordon Brown the Academy is needed and failure to establish it will lead to a skills shortage. The lack of an advanced training program will also mean UK students will not be able to train in advanced technology used in textile industries around the world and being built in the United Kingdom.

The UK has been working on improving its fashion and textile industry and the Academy was proposed as a solution to a skilled labor shortage. It is apparent that the new school will not be established in the near future at this point.
