The US newspaper ‘Birmingham News’s (31-October-2009, p. 1F) recently had a large picture of little girls and boys in school uniforms. It was a story about the decline in Catholic school enrollments. The decline is primarily due to the economy. Catholic schools are private schools and mostly self-supporting through the collection of tuition. In addition the children are required to wear uniforms. The cost of tuition and uniforms has proven to be too costly for a number of parents. Many public schools in the USA do not require uniforms though that is rapidly changing. With the downturn in the economy a lot of parents are struggling to stay current on their household accounts and there is little allowance made for clothing.
The picture in the paper shows several young girls and boys in their uniforms. The uniforms consist of some jumpers for girls, but most of the girls are wearing skirts and polo shirts. The polo shirts are affordable shirts that can withstand the rugged wear they get. Polo shirts will last at least one whole school season and maybe more. That’s why you see boys in the pictures wearing polo shirts also. Some schools allow the children to wear t-shirts. The white t-shirts are neat looking and can be washed over and over again. Some schools choose colored t-shirts believing white is too difficult to maintain throughout the day.
Catholic school enrollments in the 30 schools operated by the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham are down by 2 percent this year. The schools assist with uniform costs by ordering inexpensive polo shirts and t-shirts printed with the school logo.
