What Kind Of Man Wears Faded T-Shirts?

Thursday 08th of October 2009 01:08:03 PM

What Kind Of Man Wears Faded T-Shirts?There was an interesting opinion piece in The New York Times (Sept 20, 2009, Sunday Styles, p. 6) under the heading “Forget the Men. Pick a Guy.” Written by Cathleen Calbert, she explains in great detail why she differentiates between men and guys. Many women see them as the same thing, but not Calbert. She sees them quite differently and tells you right from the start she prefers guys. In fact, she married one.

So what is a guy according to her? A guy doesn’t mind telling you he loves a new writer and he won’t tell you want to do. A guy, compared to a man, is more easygoing and willing to embrace new ideas and concepts as they come along. A guy doesn’t worry about things like the garbage needing to be taken out or the dog eating the meatloaf. Men, on the other hand, are tougher and less willing to show real emotion, but they would seem at times to be more responsible. It comes down to whether you want spontaneity in a guy or the more serious can’t-let-my-guard-down man.

This opinion piece on love appears in the Sunday Styles section because one thing that differentiates a guy from a man is clothes. A guy will wear cheap t-shirts with faded logos pushing some faraway island. Men wear dress shirts in colors that seem to indicate they are having trouble finding a personal style.

Clothes play such an important role in our lives because they literally can send a message about our personality and preferences. Those cheap t-shirts and sweatshirts may not look as professional as polo shirts, but they are comfortable, useful and easy-going…like the wearers. Calbert believes guys are lighter, more fun and more loving. One way to pick them out of the crowd it seems is to look for the faded logo t-shirts.
