Crinkly soft fabrics are the choice of Calvin Klein this year as the designer avoids stiff fabrics in his fashion designs. When you pick up the material in a dress and mash it in a closed fist, the material floats back into place when released. Calvin Klein has also blended a variety of materials into single garments such as a dress composed of sewn together strips of nylon, silk and wool.Klein’s soft skirts and feminine shorts pair well with blank t-shirts. In fact the designer himself, Francisco Costa, wears simple jeans and a white shirt so it seems appropriate his clothing designs would include comfortable lines blended with a sense of sophistication. The Calvin Klein fashion show included a display of dresses, pants, blazers, and jeans. Also displaying new styles was Ralph Lauren. Many of the styles were reminiscent of Laura Ashley 1980s designs that were cool and feminine. Some reactions to the new Lauren line were not all positive only because the styles seemed dated at times or rather outdated.
The fashion show was held at the Gagosian Gallery and included designer names like Oscar de la Renta and Isaac Mizrahi and L’Wren Scott. Like the Calvin Klein collection there was a definite trend towards softer and flirtier materials and designs. For example, the Mizrahi line included polo shirts that had sheer nylon backs. All in all the attendees had a wonderful time and made positive comments about the trend towards more feminine clothing. This trend might possibly be a response to the difficult economic times that have a cast a dreariness over the fashion industry. The soft fabrics are in direct opposition to the tough conditions providing welcomed relief.
