T-shirts get trendier everyday as they are combined with other garments to create that casual yet sophisticated look. Even simple cotton black t-shirts are being used to make a fashion statement. This was apparent when looking at the 5cm menswear line sold in a number of stores owned by the Hong Kong company Gregan 101 Corp. The newest 5cm store will open at the Mall of Asia. This is the same company that opened a 5cm store in Manila last April with the store catering to twenty and thirty something year old shoppers. The store encourages men to wear what are traditionally considered to be women’s clothing such as cropped pants. Women can try outfits that include items such as dress made out of a man’s shirt.
The cost of the clothing is not cheap, but anyone can imitate the style by purchasing cheap t-shirts and combining them with trendy pants or skirts. A variety of coloured t-shirts can be matched with items such as hi-top and leather jackets. It is the simplicity of the t-shirt that makes it so easy to use in informal to formal outfits. As the 5cm business manager points out, t-shirts are versatile. Commenting on the 5cm clothing line, Charity C. Gesite, business development manager, was quoted as saying, “It’s not outstanding from afar, but then you take a closer look our T-shirts have special treatments, some you can wear with [a matching] scarf, it’s a set, or you may not, that’s okay. We have reversible biker jackets, they’re very useful. There are so many zips and buckles [that] it adds value to the item, it’s both on function and design. The tailored jackets go well with T-shirts or dress shirts, jeans or cropped shorts, anything.”
