Kennedy and Polo Shirts

The death of US Senator Edward Kennedy has inspired a number of articles and stories about his family, life and service to his country. For those who don’t recognize the name, Senator Kennedy was in the US Senate for almost 47 years and served as the leader of the liberal philosophy. His family is an American icon family with a brother who was a US President and one who was a US Attorney General. Both brothers were assassinated leaving Senator Kennedy as the head of a very large family.

One of the articles written about Senator Kennedy discussed the easy dress style of the Kennedy family. Many of the family members including Edward Kennedy loved sailing and the outdoor life and in many of the pictures the men are wearing polo shirts. Their clothes are comfortable, stylish and came to represent the sporty American style that also spoke of money. There are polo shirts, chinos, boat shoes, crew necks, and windbreaker jackets for recreation. When it was time to dress up the Ivy League suits for men and simple pleated skirts or A-line dresses for women were common.

One of the facts noted about the Kennedy family pictures is the fact that they dressed casually but always looked well-dressed. The neat polo shirts and pressed pants made the Kennedy men look handsome and as if they were always in control. The understated style always seemed to work for them. As fashion has become more eclectic and much less “put together”, the iconic Kennedy family pictures look a bit dated. But interestingly the fashion industry seems to be returning to the casually neat look of the Kennedy era. It seems that polo shirts will always be popular whether you are wealthy...or not.
