The summer heat wave in England coupled with clearance sales resulted in a 1.4 percent increase in like-for-like retail sales in the United Kingdom when comparing June of this year to June of last year. This is per the British Retail Consortium. The BRC reported that last year June was a rainy and colder-than-normal month so it is not surprising that retail sales have increased this year. The retail items that showed increased sales included clothing and footwear. When comparing retail sales on a total basis instead of on a like-for-like basis the sales increased by 3.2 percent. The news was even better for internet and phone sales. Retail sales for all clothing, including t-shirts, rose by 16.8 percent for sales through the internet, mail-order and over the phone.
Stephen Robertson is the Director General of the British Retail Consortium. He said, "June's sunshine gave overall sales a much-needed boost. Many clothing clearance sales coincided nicely with the upsurge in demand for summer wear that came from the good weather.” The Head of Retail for KPMG confirmed that assessment when she said, “Although overall sales performance continues to be driven by food, many non-food retailers had a better month in June. This was certainly true in clothing as a result of some early sales and promotions which benefitted children's clothing and footwear in particular. The gap between total sales performance and like-for-like continues to narrow, highlighting the reductions in new store openings in the current environment. Two years of negative like-for-likes at store level for many retailers is putting severe pressure on cash and profits.” Many people are turning to internet retailers because the prices are often lower and it can be cheaper to shop online in other ways. You don’t have to drive your car or pay for parking or deal with the other annoyances like traffic that come with storefront shopping.
