T-Shirts, Polo-Shirts, and Sweaters Are Ageless

Friday 03rd of July 2009 05:27:54 PM

T-Shirts, Polo-Shirts, and Sweaters Are AgelessThere was an article in the New York Times “Styles” section that was titled “Irony and the Old Lady.” The article talked about how women tend to start viewing themselves differently beginning around age 50, and as a result, they also begin to let go of iconic or daring clothing. When you are younger, it is fun to wear odd clothing at times as personal tastes and preferences are being developed. The coy sock, thigh high boots, retro-clothing, and flimsy tops lead to fascinating outfits ideally suited for younger women, but then one day it becomes time to ask if it is possible to be “too old for that.”

It’s a long process from the teenage years to the age of 50. But when it’s time to let go of youthful fashion, it’s also time to find the new style that fits the next years after 50. If you throw away the mini-skirts, bow ties, bra-less shirts, slick fashions, and all those outfits you bought on a whim, there are a lot of empty drawers and closets begging to be filled.

Of course, some people don’t let go. Madonna is a classic example of a woman who is fit and obviously committed to being a slave to odd styles and outfits. But the fact is that most women at age 50 will not be wearing mini balloon skirts and hair bows that stick up like rabbit ears. They also will not be wearing the very odd outfits like those assembled by the Italian Vogue editor Anna Piaggi. Her shawls, clownish hats, fans, sleeves covering her hands and mixture of prints are too unusual for even many daring women. So where does that leave the average 50 year old woman?

If you are looking for flattering clothes that are versatile and can be adorned however you want, it’s simply hard to beat simple t-shirts or polo shirts. These classic styles can be worn with dresses, skirts, shorts, pants, or even leotards if you are having trouble letting go of the more youthful styles. You can mix it up, vary the colours, add accessories for a fashion edge, have them printed, or do just about anything else you want. T-shirts and sweaters are classic clothing that crosses over the decades. So you can go ahead and throw away the hip boots and keep the t-shirts.
