ClickandBuy ordered a survey of British consumers buying items using the internet. The survey was completed by YouGov in April 2009 and included responses from 2,030 adults in the United Kingdom. The purpose of the survey was to identify the habits of online shoppers. The results were very surprising! Consumers trying to buy everything from food to sweaters were canceling their purchases when unable to pay with their preferred payment method. What this means is that online retailers are losing millions worth of sales when customers can't choose from among a range of payment options. It seems that shoppers are much more comfortable using an internet vendor who offers more than one payment option.
ClickandBuy is an internet payment system which is why the company commissioned the survey. The survey discovered that as many as 50 percent of online shoppers will cancel a a purchase when it's time to pay because they can't pay the way they prefer.
One of the big issues that came to light was continued concern about using e-commerce with minimal risk. Many internet shoppers are worried about financial security and identify theft when paying online. Up to 83 percent of survey respondants said they believe that internet fraud is a growing risk as internet use expands around the globe. It is another reason why internet shoppers are canceling purchases even after going to all the effort to make item selections.
Internet merchants can lose many valuable sales if its customers do not feel secure going through the payment process. Forty-five percent of those surveyed did say they planned on using the internet more looking for cheaper prices as the recession lingers on. But one-third admitted they do not feel any safer buying online now as compared to how they felt about internet shopping five years ago. So when shopping online for anything including t-shirts and polo-shirts, make sure you use a proven and reliable vendor.
