The torn t-shirt rose to fashion fame in the 1980’s with the USA-made movie classic, “Flashdance”. The movie’s star, Jennifer Beale, was seen wearing a t-shirt that had been strategically torn to hang gracefully over her shoulder. The t-shirt was so alluring it was featured in the movie’s publicity shots. The torn t-shirt quickly became an ‘80s fashion statement. And guess what? They are back and updated for summer 2009. The “torn” t-shirts for this summer are flying off store racks.
Torn t-shirts are not exactly “torn”. They are intentionally cut to look as if they hang gracefully on the body. The torn t-shirts for summer 2009 are not the big, loose one we last saw on Jennifer Beale. Today’s tees have a slimmer silhouette and the edges and seams are professionally finished.
Torn t-shirts are paired with complimenting tank tops and they are available in a variety of colors. The main “tear” is a swath across the collar that opens it up and allows it to hang off one shoulder. Other cuts may include slashes to open the sleeves which result in a belled sleeve effect and cuts up the side seams to open up the shirt itself.
Several designers have arisen who specialize in t-shirt fashion. One particularly interesting design team will take the t-shirt off your back and cut it with a simple pair of scissors while you wait. This is a great publicity gimmick but it also puts t-shirt fashion on the forefront.
Consumers can even make their own torn t-shirts. After purchasing a high quality cotton tee anyone can make a few slices and come away with a one-of-a-kind, hip design. With the ability of this type of t-shirt to be worn over a tank it is safe to say it will carry over into the fall.
