The current trend in cotton clothing, t-shirts and polo shirts included, is eco friendly production methods. Organic cotton t-shirts should be made with organic cotton but other factors are becoming increasingly important to consumers who are going green.Organic cotton is grown using no pesticides or harmful chemicals. These methods help preserve the earth and the health of farmers working with the cotton plants. Organic cotton t-shirts are certified if they are made from cotton using these guidelines.
But today’s consumers are looking at more than the growing methods when shopping for organic clothing. Eco friendly items now take into consideration the growing, the harvesting, the manufacturing, and even the delivery methods of organic cotton goods.
To be 100 percent eco friendly a t-shirt must of course be made of organic cotton fibers. The harvesting of the cotton must use as little fuel as possible as should the manufacturing. The best eco products are grown and manufactured near where the consumer shops to lessen transportation needs.
Analise Braken of Grist says that all organic cotton is not 100 percent organic. “The cotton itself may be grown organically but what about the manufacturing process? Don’t you lose the meaning behind “organic” when you use child labor overseas to process the cotton fibers? It is important to see the entire scope of organic products, not just cotton t-shirts. For us to really make a difference we must change the entire process from seed to cloth,” explains Braken.
Grist calls for a major re-hauling of the production industry for cotton clothing. Almost none of the organic t-shirts in stores today, says the ezine, are 100 percent organic. They have successfully aroused consumer interest in making the world greener and the magazine hopes that the general public will follow suit and demand 100 percent organic materials in their local stores.
