Fashion is cyclical. We all wish we had kept our skinny legged jeans and capris from years past when they suddenly became all the rage last season. This spring you may find yourself wishing your mom had held onto her sweater sets. The garment industry is hoping just the opposite! When sweaters hit the runways for the spring season they caused a buzz. While some retailers worried it would equal low sales figures as consumers dug out their old mix and match pieces they were soon proved wrong. This spring’s sweater sets are not your mother’s sweater sets.
The sweater sets on spring runways last fall wowed retailers and fashion insiders. New construction, detailing, and color choice made this old standby something new and unique-a must have for the season.
Kay Tecci of NNI was at the spring shows and placed “enormous orders with several manufacturers.” She was very excited about the new lines presented by many designers. “I am seeing a whole new take on this type of garment. I wore these things in college, but nothing like the ones I saw today. They are going to excite consumers – get them to buy,” Tecci stated in a post runway interview.
Early sales figures are proving Tecci’s prediction right. Many department stores are reporting higher than expected sales of mix and match cotton separates including sweater sets and plain t-Shirts.
What is so unique about this season’s sweater sets? Everything! The sweater sets for spring are bold and bright. For the first time designers are mixing colors. For example, a vivid orange shell may be paired with a hot fuchsia sweater. Patterns are also mixed and matched and embellishments are liberally added.
It is hoped that sales will continue to rise throughout the season for these fashionable casual wear items.
