In today’s economy everybody is looking for a sure thing. In the textile and garment industry this means children’s wear. History shows that even during a recession children’s wear sales will increase. The past years garment industry figures reveal the truth about clothing sales.. A quick glance will show you that women’s wear is showing a downward trend and men’s wear is remaining stable, but not increasing. Children’s wear is different story. Last year, as women’s and men’s wear was not faring well, children’s wear showed a 2.5 percent increase.
There are several reasons parents continue to buy for children during a recession, the most important being the constant growth children experience. The t-shirts that fit last month may suddenly be too small this month.
Parents also want their children to look nice. They see this as a reflection on themselves as parents. Boys dressed in nice polo shirts and khakis make parents proud.
This spring retailers are stocking up on children’s wear. T-shirts, polo shirts, and other cotton clothing items are popular. Cotton clothing is comfortable and durable, both important qualities for children.
There is one concession in children’s wear being made to the recession, says Jamie MacKenneth. “You will not see the embellishments this spring that have been so popular for the past few seasons. Instead of rhinestones consumers will find modest embroidery or stitching around hems and necklines of t-shirts. This type of detail is less expensive but still finishes a garment.”
The preppy look is also big for children’s wear. Oxford shirts and polo shirts are being paired with slacks and shorts. These shirts are extremely valuable in the current economy because they can be mixed and matched to create numerous outfits.
Consumers are advised to buy smartly and focus on durability. Also look for t-shirts, polo shirts, and other fashion items that you can mix to create a variety of outfits.
