Think Spring: The Classic Cotton Cardigan

In these frigid last days of winter you may find yourself looking ahead to spring. The stores certainly are and one thing popping up in many stores is the cardigan sweater for spring. Classic and comfortable, these sweaters are perfect for all types of weather and are sure to be one of the season’s biggest trends.

“The great thing about a cardigan,” says Sheila Mullins of FIT, an industry newsletter, “is that they are so versatile. You can wear them alone or layer them for colder days. They are easy to take off if the weather warms up and can easily be tied around the shoulders for a charming fashion accessory.”

The new cardigans for spring come in many different styles and colors. Stores are showing the classic cardigan silhouette with zipper, button, and even tie fronts. Sleeve lengths vary from full length to short with some adorable three-quarter length designs available. Textures also vary with cotton weave and cable knit being the most popular.

The colors this spring are bright and fabulous. After a long winter it is fun to walk into stores and see hot pinks, electric oranges, and earthy greens. Added to these delicious colors are many other design elements such as patches and beading that designers hope will make them an instant hit with consumers, especially teen girls.

“These are not your mother’s cardigans,” Mullins stated using the old cliché. “Even the classic button front cardigans have been updated with what today’s consumer will view as stylish – crystals, ribbons, and other design elements not normally seen with this type of clothing.”

Stores are banking on consumers falling in love with the ‘new’ cardigan. After a slow holiday season this hot item may be just what they need to boost sells in this first quarter of the year.
