Unfortunately, when economic times get difficult there are more scams and thefts that take place. Criminals try to take advantage of people who are struggling financially and looking for ways to cut costs in order to make ends meet. As a result there is a proliferation of counterfeit goods. Some counterfeit sales are so successful they have a measurable impact on the profit margins of the companies retailing the goods being copied. One of the industries which sees many fakes making it to the marketplace is fashion. Counterfeit fashion refers to clothing which copies original brands and even uses the brand name illegally. Counterfeit garments are made for every kind of clothing including dresses, beachwear, and t-shirts to name just a few.
Consumers buying brand name clothing online should make sure they access a reliable company. Counterfeiters like selling fake brand copies online because of the anonymity and low cost of setting up and doing business. The counterfeit business has grown so large that over $135 billion of counterfeit goods were sold online in 2008.
In response to the rise of counterfeit goods, including in the clothing industry, retailers are increasingly using web technology which tracks the use of brand and company names. Mr. Antony Gold is the Eversheds law firm retail sector director. He said it is up to the brand name companies and other retailers to monitor the internet, because consumers are not familiar with the counterfeiters’ methods. He pointed out that the counterfeiting must be addressed at the point of distribution and sale and brand protection will include finding a legal means of putting a stop to the source of the counterfeits.
The message to businesses is to always be aware of the need to be alert to the possibility of counterfeit sales. The message to consumers is to buy your t-shirts, sweatshirts, uniforms and fashion from reliable online companies.
