USA First Lady To-Be Wears T-Shirts

Saturday 15th of November 2008 03:18:44 PM

USA First Lady To-Be Wears T-ShirtsThe US has elected a new president and in the process also has adopted a First Lady who wears more youthful clothing than First Ladies have in the past. Michelle Obama eschewed the stuffy designer suits at election rallies and instead chose casual and comfortable clothing such as skirts and t-shirts. She seldom wears pantyhose and usually wears flat shoes.

That is not to say she avoids fashion. The exact opposite is true. She has created a stir in the fashion world for a number of reasons. Michelle Obama often wears clothing with striking colours and patterns that are made with simple lines. Her fashion sense has been called youthful and progressive. She has also chosen to wear dresses and outfits carrying the names of lesser known American designers which seems fitting for a First-Lady-To-Be.

Obama’s choice of emerging designer clothing has been welcomed by the American fashion world. Michelle Obama can easily switch between chic fashion and casual wear. One day you may see her in an outfit by American designer Thakoon Panichgul or Isabel Toleda. The next night she might attend a political function wearing Gap or J.Crew. She is frequently seen wearing plain tees and jeans.

Barb Atkin is a Holt Renfrew Vice-President. Shea said, “It’s history in its making and a whole new voice of youth that is demanding authenticity.” Speaking about Michelle Obama’s choice of American designers, Atkins said, “It’s time to look at our own countries and celebrate who we are, look to the talent within our own country and help them get started. She (Obama), has a strong voice and there is no better woman in the world that can give them a bigger profile, in the way that Jackie Kennedy swayed millions of women around the world and became an icon of that time.” Already, clothing shoppers are imitating Michelle Obama’s style by purchasing off-the-rack copies as fast as they appear.
