Can Soon Shop for T-Shirts in London West End in Style

Friday 10th of October 2008 05:29:10 PM

Can Soon Shop for T-Shirts in London West End in StyleEconomic times are difficult and retail sales are dropping in almost every category from blank t-shirts to evening gowns to trousers. Yet keeping retail sales flowing is important, because when people stop spending the economic spiral downward accelerates. So the announcement that the West-end of London is planning an expensive makeover may seem a bit odd at this point in time, but in actuality the investment in the shopping area is a community re-investment that shows economic confidence.

The New West End Company is spearheading a makeover of the London west end area of Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street. The chairman of the New West End Company, Dame Judith Mayhew-Jonas, is heading the efforts which will include both the private and public sectors.

The goal is to make the retail and business area attractive so people are willing to spend their time and their money in the area. This will increase retail and tax revenues. The timing is ideal for a number of reasons. Dame Mayhew-Jonas said, "The development of Crossrail with a new station being built at Tottenham Court Road means that we have a once-in-a-century opportunity to transform the eastern end of Oxford Street."

The improvements will have lofty goals. The New West End Company will oversea the development of the area and then will also promote the refurbished shopping district. The goal is turn the area into a world-class shopping destination attracting buyers from around the world. There has been enthusiastic project support from retailers and business owners.

The cost of the makeover is expected to be £1.5bn. The improvements include better lighting, easier pedestrian access, reductions in bus traffic and better signage. Right now the London west-end area is called an eyesore by many, but that won't be true once this project is completed.
