The Topshop is the United Kingdom's popular retailer of trendy and chic inexpensive clothing. Arcadia Group owns Topshop and had announced they planned on opening the first USA outlet in the fall of 2008. Instead, the long anticipated opening has been moved to sometime in March 2009.The first Topshop is going to opening in Soho in New York City. The building where the store will be located is 150 years old and has 45,000 square feet. Preparing the building for occupancy has turned into a more extensive process than planned. The interior of the building had to be gutted and completely reworked. New floors and escalators are being added. Arcadia Group has learned quickly that things work differently in the USA than they do in the UK. Sir Philip Green is the owner of Arcadia and he said, "America is a new territory for us and we have to get it exactly right."
The new store will have glossy shelving and a DJ booth which will hang from the ceiling.
Some people speculated the problems with the USA financial markets are the real reason for the delay. Sir Green denied this and said Topshop will continue to plan for the spring 2009 opening. A Topshop spokesperson said the company "will continue to continue marketing and press activity in USA including Spring press showing, possible partnership with Opening Ceremony and also marketing competitions".
Despite the delay in the opening of the first USA retail store, Topshop launched a website for American buyers. Topshop.com has a line of clothing which is called the Kate Moss collection. The first site visitors received Kate Moss t-shirts sponsoring a charity. Topshop had hoped to have its New York store open in time for Christmas, but will now rely on its USA e-commerce store to attract American buyers.
