The clothing industry has been turning to more and more eco-friendly fabrics and dyes. Clariant is the latest international industry member to announce a new environmentally friendly dye. Called the “Advanced Denim” concept, the dye is intended to be environmentally sound, health protecting and generally safe. The company developed two new dyes which are sulphur based. The dyes are intended for use on clothing and textiles including jeans, trousers and any other clothing made out of denim. The dyes follow the previous introduction of dyes called Diresul Indiblue RDT-R and Diresul Indiblue RDT-G liquid which are used in Indigo and Indigo-free denim materials. At some point it would be expected the company will produce other eco-sound dyes for non-denim type clothing such as t-shirts.
The dyes were introduced at the Fabric Start Fair held in Germany. The dyes are not only environmentally friendly, but they are fashion friendly also. They hold up well after repeated washings. They can also be used to create a variety of shadings, affects and finishes. The Advanced Denim colours include blue, grey and blue and fashion effects that include dark, ring and solid denims.
These sulphur based dyes do not contain any amines, heavy metals, halogens or any other harmful chemicals that might damage the environment. The dyes are also bio-degradable. In addition, the dyes are designed to improve the manufacturing process by reducing the amount of required water and energy during the dying process.
Miguel Sanchez, Head of Global Production Line Dyes for Cellulosics was quoted as saying, “Advanced Denim confirms Clariant‘s leadership in the field of denim innovation and creativity while strengthening our commitment to developing ecologically sound products and applications. We see this move as a synergy of ecology, technology and fashion which offers our customers the most advanced solutions.”
