UK Clothing E-commerce Continues to Grow

Thursday 21st of August 2008 03:26:00 PM

UK Clothing E-commerce Continues to GrowThe indicators in the UK retail industry may show a decline in consumer spending fuelling fears of a recession, until you consider e-retail. E-retail is the online retail industry and it’s doing better than ever despite a sagging UK economy. Consumers are turning more and more to online buying of clothing items such as t-shirts and polo shirts. Online purchasing is easy and convenient and the source of some of the best bargains to be found. Buying online can be a great way to compensate for inflationary pressures that lead to less disposable spending thanks to the tremendous bargains that can be found.

New July figures were released by IMRG Capgemini and the e-Retail Sales Index showed that spending online rose by an impressive amount in July. The total value of retail spending reached £4.80 billion. This is the same as every UK man, woman and child spending £79 during the month. The online retail business almost seems like it is credit-crunch-proof, because all of the off-line retail sales figures indicate pressures on disposable income have forced people to cut back on unessential spending. Yet the online spending figures continue to climb. The traditional retail sales in stores actually fell .9% from June to July.

The biggest online retail sector was in clothes, shoes and accessories. Mr. Mike Petevinos is head of retail consulting at Capgemini UK. He said, “More categories are like to follow as consumers feel more comfortable and retailers get their delivery models right, making returns easier.” He went to say that online order fulfilment and distributions systems have been vastly improved which has led to better customer service.

Online sales figures indicate that UK consumers are savvy buyers looking for bargains. They are good at comparison shopping when searching for the best deals. So when you need to buy cheap polo shirts or are looking for wholesale t-shirts, the best place to begin may very well be online.
