One beautiful morning in Lumpur, a lake side parked was filled with visitors holding pink-coloured balloons and wearing pink t-shirts. They were there to participate in the charity event called "Avon Walk Around the World For Breast Cancer" (WAWBC). The event was sponsored by Avon Cosmetics in Malaysia and included 50 survivors of breast cancer.Using a formula that works to increase fund raising, the event included celebrities Angkasawan Datuk, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar, Shukor Al Masrie and many others. Helping to make the event run smoothly the day of the walk was Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen. Dr. Muszaphar has a personal interest in the awareness campaign, because his aunt died of breast cancer. Now he works with many people who have been diagnosed with cancer.
In Malaysia, 1 out of 19 Malaysian women are considered to be at high risk of developing breast cancer. Lack of information has made many fear seeking preventative medical testing. Charity events such as that held by Avon gets the message out to women that early detection through mammograms can save lives. The charity event funds are donated to the Pink Ribbon Deeds Foundation which focuses on increasing breast cancer awareness.
The pink tees are well recognized around the world as a result of these kinds of charity events being held. Women like Tammy Tam and Rene'e Aziz Ahmad who have survived breast cancer often become role models for other women. Many women have fought and won the cancer battle and then become inspirations for others facing the same ordeal. They wear the pink t-shirts and the pink ribbons as symbols of their tenacity and appreciation of life. Rene'e even went on to climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro which became a metaphor for conquering difficult conditions.
