Will Paula Radcliffe Get Her T-Shirt?

Wednesday 16th of July 2008 02:12:17 PM

Will Paula Radcliffe Get Her T-Shirt?Although the Olympics is much more than just a T-Shirt, one UK athlete will have until August 16 to decide if she can run or not. Paula Radcliffe has been allowed to wait until just 22 and a half hours before the Olympics marathon in Beijing to decide whether she is fit enough to run. Dave Collins, UK Athletics Performance Director, revealed the decision on the marathon world record-holder will be left to the last possible moment - 9am on Saturday, August 16 - when Great Britain has to declare their marathon runners.

Radcliffe had tests this week on the stress fracture which has upset her Beijing plans. She admitted, "I'm going back to continue my training - but yes, it is going to be a race against time."

If Paula Radcliffe is not ready by the deadline, then it is planned that they will nominate their official reserve, Scotland's Hayley Haining, to take her place. However, it is possible that the request could be rejected by the International Olympic Committee because the injury is not last-minute.

Collins is insisting that Radcliffe deserves every opportunity to prove she can be ready for her biggest marathon. He said, “We are talking about a world record holder and a world champion. If I thought for one minute this was someone that was stringing us along, it would be different. Performance brings privilege. Given her professionalism and commitment, I am happy to give her the time. I don't think she will go for the T-Shirt."

Although Collins knows there is a risk the IOC will reject Haining if Radcliffe is not ready, he said, "I am willing to take that option. Paula is in the middle of a slow rehab process. It is a case of how well that rehab process goes.” If Haining is rejected, it will mean that the team will have only two runners, Mara Yanauchiand and Liz Yelling.
