Melton School to Abandon Polo Shirts

Tuesday 15th of July 2008 06:00:38 AM

Melton School to Abandon Polo ShirtsKing Edward VII pupils may soon be wearing the old grammar school tie, blazer and lion crest in place of Polo Shirts. The proposed move is linked to the creation of the new 11 to 16 school on the Burton Road campus and would help give it a fresh start, literally smartening up its image.

According to Tony Pinnock, Assistant Principal, “What's perhaps surprising is the suggestion came from pupils. They have started to recognise that at primary level pupils wear polo shirts and sweatshirts. They wanted something smarter that sets them apart."

Zoe Wright, 14, said: "It's good because the first thing people look at is how you are dressed. If they see you are smart they will think King Edward VII is a good school."

Hannah Denny, 15, agreed: "It will probably make you feel a bit prouder of the school. But it will also mean you can't get bullied for what you wear. Some people can't afford to wear designer clothes."

And president of school association the Edwardians, former pupil June Anderson, was delighted with the idea. She said: "I think it's a very good idea because the other high schools will be on a par with King Edward VII. They all have uniforms and it would be good for King Edward VII to have one, too."

The school had an old fashioned uniform with a black and gold tie and the lion rampant, the symbol of Melton, on a blazer but dropped it after it became a comprehensive.

Principal Chris Williams introduced a uniform about three years ago. The uniform consisted of a grey polo shirt and a black sweater. It received mixed reviews after years of no uniform.

However, according to Mr. Pinnock, "At the time some were really against it because they used to wear what they liked. But we've had a reduction in bullying since because pupils can't be picked on for not wearing the latest fashions and parents said it them saved an absolute fortune in clothing costs."
