The clothes which were worn by the fictional TV mob boss, Tony Soprano, have sold at a charity auction at Christie’s in New York, for an astonishing £95,464. The majority of the clothing was donated by actor James Gandolfini, who played the mob boss, Tony Soprano for six seasons. This made a seemingly ordinary blood-stained polo shirt become a collector’s item.
The charity that Gandolfini chose was the Wounded Warrior charity. The charity aids the US soldiers who are wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gandolfini was said to have attended the auction at Christie’s with a soldier from the nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project.
The clothing which received the highest bidding was the bloody outfit that Tony Soprano wore when he was shot by Uncle Junior. The bloody outfit consisted of a black and beige polo shirt, a white tank top and black trousers. The outfit went for a mere £22,245, faux blood and all.
The next highest bid was for a four-piece costume which included a blue, red and yellow striped robe and the boxer shorts that Tony Soprano wore in numerous episodes of the smash hit series for HBO. The outfit went for £10,805.
There were other top-selling outfits including a cotton tan bathrobe with lavender trim and a “S” insignia on the breastpocket. The robe was featured in the pilot when Tony Soprano fetched the morning paper and fed the ducks in his pool. The robe went for £6,991. A blue shirt that was worn by Tony Soprano in the opening titles of the show also sold for the same amount of money.
There were twenty-five outfits sold for the charity during the auction. James Gandolfini donated his entire wardrobe from the show in order to help the charity. Each of the outfits were authenticated by Gandolfini and several of them had the original production tags attached.
