There will be two dozen of the costumes used by “The Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, auctioned off today at Christie’s Auction house on Rockefeller Plaza. James Gandolfini played the head mobster, Tony Soprano. The proceeds from the auction will go to charity. The lots from ‘The Sopranos” will highlight the auction houses Pop Culture series of auctions, which include film, comic book, music and toy collectibles.
James Gandolfini is said to have donated his entire wardrobe from the series. The proceeds from the auction will be going to the Wounded Warrior project. This organisation provides services and programs for members of the armed forces who are wounded.
John Melia, Wounded Warrior Project Founder and Executive Director, commended Gandolfini on his work within the organisation. “We are thankful for James Gandolfini’s commitment to our organisation. His public support and generous donation gives a world-wide voice to the severely wounded men and women WWP assists.”
The donated wardrobe includes articles of clothing from head to toe. These items include shirts, suits, bathrobes and shoes. The Sopranos was critically acclaimed for its costume design. Juliet Polsca, the show’s costume designer, was nominated twice for an Emmy. Whilst there are many different costumes being auctioned off, one of the stand out items is a black and beige polo shirt complete with faux blood. During the first episode of the sixth season, “Members Only,” James Gandolfini’s character Tony was shot whilst wearing the polo shirt.
Whilst the main focus of the auction is on Gandolfini’s donated costumes, Christie’s will also be auctioning off costumes from several other characters in ‘The Sopranos.’ However, only the proceeds from the items donated by Gandolfini will be for charity. The winners of Gandolfini’s costumes can rest assured that the items they are receiving are truly unique mementos and that their money is being donated to a great cause.
