Maria Sharapova has said “No” to her previous figure hugging tennis dresses and has instead said “Yes” to a T-shirt and shorts. Whilst this may be a shock to her fans, she has decided to don a much simpler gear as she is more interested in her own comfort.
In the past, the 2004 singles champion has wowed her fans and Centre Court with figure hugging tennis dresses. Previous dresses have included frilly dresses and diamond encrusted outfits. However, Miss Sharapova has stated that she is more comfortable in simpler gear and has chosen instead to just wear a T-shirt and shorts for Wimbledon 2008.
During her practice at the All England Club this week, she took the opportunity to tease her fans. She told them, “I’m going to be debuting a new look. I’m going with the traditional shorts, believe it or not. I’ve never worn shorts at a Grand Slam. Call it menswear, obviously. It’s kind of a tuxedo look, very simple lines, classic.”
Maria Sharapova has been enjoying a return to her best form this year. She won her 3rd Grand Slam title in January at the Australian Open. She will be matched against Stephanie Foretz, a French qualifier during her first match. Stephanie Foretz is ranked in the top 100, however, her track record on grass is poor.
The top seed honour has been given to Ana Ivanovic, 20, of Serbia. However, bookmakers have named Maria Sharapova as their tournament favourite. It will be an interesting tournament without Miss Sharapova’s former glitzy attire during her matches. However, it will be very interesting, indeed, to see if her new choice of attire makes for better play on the court. Although she claims the attire is traditional and classic, we are sure that her male admirers will find her T-shirt and shorts to be anything less than extraordinary.
