Business dress codes are different today than they were 20 years ago. According to a recent report by Management Today, a survey has been conducted of 422 directors and managers across the United Kingdom. According to managementtoday.com, “there has been a marked relaxation in our attitudes toward dress codes at work in recent years. Fewer than a quarter of employers now require their staff to dress formally at all times – whereas over half allow them to wear smart-casual attire, only requiring them to don a suit for business meetings.” Today, people in many sectors are wearing Polo Shirts and trousers to work. Interestingly enough, workers do not seem interested in wearing jeans and trainers to the office. Many feel that it is too casual and inappropriate.
The changes in dress code have not been the same across the different business sectors. The survey indicates that approximately one half of those in the financial industries are still required to wear a suit to work every day. People who work for media outlets tend to have one of the most relaxed dress codes and they often wear jeans and trainers.
While casual wear such as Polo Shirts and trousers are now widely acceptable, the verdict is still out on some other items. Flip flops are widely thought to be inappropriate and the opinion is split on things such as visible tattoos and facial piercings.
Of course each business has its own definition of casual. Some allow T-Shirts as long as they do not have logos and others prefer more tailored Polo Shirts. Either way, the goal is the same and that is to make employees comfortable to do their jobs in a way that reflects positively on the business. So, while you still need to have a suit in the closet for important meetings and events, your everyday dress may be just a bit more casual these days.
